TFAs are nothing new but recent studies have shown increased CHD or myocardial infarction deaths associated with these substances.
People in the United States get between two and 3% of their energy from TFA consumption. Places where fast food is new have much higher percentages than those who eat high amounts of fried food and pastries can get up to 10% of energy from TFAs. The government says that the most TFA intake should be 1% which is about 2 g, but others say that there is no safe level of TFAs.
With the knowledge of the dangers of trans fats so prevalent we have to ask why. The reason is that TFAs are used to produce food that has a long life restorers and transportation.
There’s still a lot of ignorance about TFAs and there is very little action being taken to correct the problem.
We can tell that the percentage of Americans aware of TFA is increasing from surveys that show that 73% are aware of the risks of heart disease.. Unfortunately, the increased awareness hasn’t changed much behavior according to University of Colorado researcher Robert Eckel. A survey by the ADA showed that 79% of Americans could not identify three foods that had trans fats in them.
Although public service announcements have raised awareness of the dangers of TFAs, it just hasn’t been enough to change the way people eat.
1. Check out the ingredient lists on the food you eat. If you’re food contains hydrogenated oils such as soybean, cottonseed, and palm oils, it has TFA content.
2. Be aware of labeling loophole’s. Companies want you to think that their foods are free of TFA, so they will say zero trans fats even if they have hydrogenated oils in the ingredients.Companies will change the serving size make it so small that they have less than half a gram of trans fats. The government will allow them to say zero trans fat is serving has less than half a gram.
3. Eat label – less foods. if you eat natural foods like brown rice, fruits, nuts, and fish, you won’t have to worry about TFAs. These are also some ways on how to lose weight fast.
4. Don’t eat foods that are associated with TFAs. Examples of this are the keys, shortening, or French fries, even some salad dressings.
Anything that helps address the TFA problem by legislation or lifestyle changes will be good for overall health.Generally, I don’t like identifying food is poison, foods with TFA content are a definite exception. If you cannot totally eliminate TFAs from your diet at least try to be more conscious of to keep them to a minimum. Be aware, that even if TFAs are eliminated, they may be replaced with something that worse.
